Another Case for the Oatmeal Files
For some reason this morning I was reminded of a pizza experience with my mom. This was at least a year ago, probably closer to three or four years. We phoned in our order and went and picked it up. Upon arriving back to my place, we started to dive into the pizza and realized it looked funny. There were yellow bits all over it.
If that was ham, it was well past it's prime. But it didn't smell rancid. Upon further investigation we determined that it was pineapple. Somehow the order taker had mistaken pineapple for pepperoni. I guess she heard ham and assumed pineapple. Our ham and pepperoni pizza had become a Hawaiian one.
Thankfully we had also ordered a supreme pizza so I had something to eat. I'm not a fan of pineapple. Thank goodness for the random specials pizza joints often have.
I'm guessing I was reminded of this because I've been misunderstanding folks the last couple of days. Allergies are on a rampage, stopping up my ears. In a meeting yesterday I thought a coworker said, "We're going out there to beat him." When really he said, "We're going out there to a meeting." Funny, but sad.
Hopefully the ragweed gets washed away with Fay remnants.

Recycling Water Filters
I nabbed this from the Ideal Bite blog.
Sample letter for Pur filter users:
Dear ___________:
I'm a devoted Pur user. But each time I throw a cartridge in the garbage to replace it with a new one, I'm sad that this plastic will end up in a landfill, where it will last forever in our environment. I use the Pur system in order to avoid the waste of plastic water bottles. I urge you to redesign the filter cartridges so that they can be refilled and/or create a system for us to recycle these plastic filter cartridges instead of sending them to the landfill.
As you may know, the Brita company in Europe has developed a comprehensive take-back recycling program for all of its filter cartridges. This program is not dependent on city recycling systems. The Brita Company itself collects, dismantles, and recycles the filter cartridges. I know that Proctor & Gamble has been making efforts lately to become much more environmentally-friendly (including your new Green Guarantee program), and this would be a great way to forward those efforts.
I look forward to hearing your views on this issue.
Sincerely,
[Your John Hancock]

There's also the Take Back the Filter campaign for Brita. Brita, actually, already has a recycling program for their filters in Europe. Sadly, the Clorox Corp. owns Brita in N. America and has no such program.

Lazor Blue
I thought about simply posting a news article about the Olympics in Lego, just to spite the heckler (heckling done via email) but reconsidered. I'm now taking the high road and not reducing myself to the heckler's level (pfffftttttt Toph).
Last night I spent nearly two hours at a car dealership. M was signing papers for her new car. Her previous one died last week, on an off ramp. Her new one is cute (color is a tad bright in daylight) and has a spiffy keen dash & stereo.
I think I'd get fed up with the manual locks & windows pretty quick tho. I'm too spoiled. I need power locks & windows. And keyless entry. And cruise control. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Shush! I already admitted to being spoiled.
The dealership gave her a sparkly clean car with almost an 1/8th of a tank of gas. We had to get gas before we got back home as it was literally on empty (plus her rental car needed gas). Her uber clean new car is also in need of an oil change. Is that common when buying used (low gas, needing oil)? My car was new and came with a full tank of gas. Granted this was in 1998.
On the bright side, it does drive well. Tho, I had issues keeping my speed constant. I didn't realize how much I rely on the shifting (and cruise control) to maintain a steady pace. Guess this means it's always manual for me.

Not An Empty Cop Car
A couple weeks ago I heard an accident outside my place. The people (teens) were fine, not sure about the wildlife tho. Only thing I can think of since there were no other cars involved and I distinctly heard the squealing of brakes (she was driving much too fast) and two thumps. Possibly a third thump but I'm just not positive.
I went outside and looked from the porch. M got her shoes on and went over to see if everyone was ok. I figured since they were all out and walking around, not hovering over anyone, they were fine. If that makes me mean, so be it.
The cops were there in minutes. I was amazed. M & I went outside to the porch, she went back in got on sandals and went up the steps, across the parking lot and made sure the kids were fine. Before she had reached the stairs to come back down, the cops were pulling up. A second cop car pulled up just after she reached the porch.
That's reassuring. Cops can be here that fast for an accident with just one car. Imagine how fast they can get here if they're using their sirens.

Phonetic Inflation
I was talking with some friends Friday night (Saturday morning) and was reminded of Victor Borge. A Danish comedian & pianist who amuses me immensely. Below are two of my favorite skits by him.
Phonetic Punctuation
Inflationary Language
And another one, just for JT... (or his dad)
Unrelatedly
I did not see any meteors. I stayed up late (read a book) and I wanted more sleep than I had gotten Sunday night. Which I did manage to accomplish. Barely.

It's Raining Meteors
The picture is of a Perseid meteor. It was photograhed by Wally Pacholka in 2002 in the US Southwest. It can be found on his website here.
That's right folks, the Perseid Meteor Shower is this week. The peak, and best time to view it, is around 0400 on August 12. I may or may not be motivated to be up at that hour to see it.
Getting up to see it isn't the hardest part. It's driving to a place with less light pollution so that I can see it. Plus it'd make for an even longer day. Ah well. I'll decide if I'm up for an excursion tonight, when I set my alarm.
More data and details about the Perseid Meteor Shower can be found at Space Daily.

I'd Like To Give Him A Green Eye
Yesterday was crap. Got some bad news at work along with a pile of more work to do. Apparently I'm supposed to be some kind of environmental magician. Because of my green leanings, I guess I'm supposed to be able to do all things environmental at work with little to no help.
I almost wish I were that good. Almost. I have no desire to spend 12+ hours at work, every day, and bring work home to do. Call me disloyal if you want, but there are more things in life than work.
Anyway, my day ended on a good note because of what I got in the mail. My U2 box set with their first three albums (Boy, October, War) remastered came!!! :) The expected delivery date was Saturday. Wahooo!! It also has a spiffy poster that I now need to acquire a frame for. Hmm maybe a lunch time excursion is in order....

I found the site Ideal Bite in an email from the FrogPond(tm). It's right up my alley, Ideal Bite that is. Environmental tips that anyone can do. The easier it is for the masses to comply, the happier I am. Since that means folks have fewer excuses for not doing something green in their lives.
