This that and the other thing. Though there might be more of this than that. And little of the other things. Maybe.

Nooooo!! Canes Lose Game 6 in OT

We were so close! It was a low scoring game but action packed at the end. I can't blame it on the refs (tho they did miss several calls throughout the game, not the least of which a hooking call just before the sabres scored to win in OT) as we didn't skate our best during the first period.

Man. So now we're going to Game 7. Thursday night in Raleigh. It'll be good to win at home but I'd rather we have won it last night. Guess that just means I have to yell harder, louder and longer than I did last night. And that Elims needs to watch even Less of the game! ;)

Cam Ward, honey, you still rock my world!!

Phone Speak

On Sunday, just after the hockey game had gone into overtime, my land line rings. As the only people who call that are telemarketers and my family and it was after 10 at night, I figured it was my family. When I know it's my family calling I often answer it other than "hello". I'll say Hallmark Gold Crown or Sam's Club etc. Just random store names. They do the same to me. We're a quirky bunch. And since my family had called me just after a previous hockey game, I figured odds were good that it was my brother or mom. I forgot about the other group of folks who call my home phone...

Me: "It's in overtime!" I answer in a sing song voice
Caller: *pause* "Uhh hello?"
Me: recognizing that it's not a family member I say, "Hello?"
Caller: "Umm is Aisha there?"
Me: "Sorry, wrong number!" I sing song and hang up before she replies

Then I laughed and laughed because the chick probably thought I was crazy. Which is fine. Chances are she won't be calling my number looking for Aisha, or anyone else, again.

I get a lot of wrong numbers too. Most often they're for Miss Ashwan. Despite my repeatedly telling the people "wrong number, she doesn't live here, update your records" etc. I still get calls for her. I've even gotten people rambling in some foreign language on my answering machine. I have no idea what they're saying as they aren't nice enough to leave a message in English or French. Or even Spanish. I could at least hazard out a few key words if it were in Spanish. Ah well, at least I know my answering machine still works.

C'mon Canes!

Just a quck blurb to shout LET'S GO HURRICANES!!!!!! They're behind in the series with Buffalo 2-1 after last night's game. :(

On the bright side OLN showed Cam Ward sitting on the bench. Hubba hubba!! Yes, I have my shallow moments. However, in this case, I like to think of it looking for the positive in the situation. Yeah. That's it.

Mmmm Ocean

You are Ocean Blue

You're both warm and practical. You're very driven, but you're also very well rounded.
You tend to see both sides to every issue, and people consider you a natural diplomat.

Unfortunately, as much as I like the name Ocean Blue (and the icon), I don't see it as me. I'm not driven, nor a diplomat. Tho I do my best to see both sides of an issue. I tried again and got, what I think, is a much more ME blue.

You Are Sky Blue

Dreamy and creative, you see the potential in everyone ... and everything!
And while you strive to have an ideal life, you are pretty mellow about it. You know your time will come.

TV Mania

So last night was the series finale of Alias and Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. I had the start times of both wrong. Oy! Thought both Alias and hockey started at 8:00. Not so. The Canes began just after 7.30 and Alias started at 9. So I missed the first 11 minutes of the first period and was early for Alias.

Then I ended up talking to the folks for 20+ minutes and having my mom fuss at me for yelling at the tv. Yet she kept talking to me. Obviously my yelling wasn't enough to disuade her. However, at 8.53 she did let me go. Guess she knew I'd just hang up rather abrupt like if she didn't :)

The Canes won!!! WoooooHOoooooo!!! Series is tied 1-1. I missed most of the game. Seemed like every time I switched back and gave the game my undivided attention, something bad happened for the Canes. So I focused on Alias without any guilt.

It was so sad. Alias ending. Stupid ABC. The best show on their channel and they mess it all up by trying to interfere. Changing the night and times it was shown. Telling them to leave Rimbaldi out of the plot. Gah! Now I have absolutely no reason to watch that channel.

As for the ending itself, it was okay. Don't want to give away too many deets on the off chance that someone hasn't seen it yet and is reading this. There was this one scene that I laughed out loud at the horrible special effects. Man. It was so obvious that Vaughn & Sydney weren't walking in the mountains. That it was a studio backdrop of a mountain with fake wind and snow flakes. It was soooo bad! Apparently ABC hacked the budget too. Thankfully they weren't "braving the mountains" too long. The way it ended with Sloane was excellent! It was amusing that the same girl that played a young Sydney also played Sydney's daughter. I would love to live in the house at the end! Fantastic beach location!

And I got some great news whilst watching the news. The Conan episode with U2 for the entire show was on last night! Glad I had Monday off and napped off and on most of the day. Finally able to see the whole show (and tape it!) again.

So I got about 2.5 hours sleep. Oy Vey Mama! I heart Urkle! :)

Festivalness

A quick shout out to my mom, before I start the real entry. Momma, I love you dearly but don't read this entry. You'll only shake your head at me.

Right, on with the blog!

Despite the threatening rain clouds, I went to a wine festival in Maryland with my friend d on Sunday. It was very similar to a wine festival that I went to in North Carolina a couple years back. We both verified that we just aren't fans of red wine. They're too sour, strong, bold.. Not sure of the right word. Heavy? We did find a lovely Sangria from Linganore though. And their Raspberry wine wasn't bad. I did not like their Peach wine at all.

Thinking back, I should've bought a bottle of the Sangria. The reasoning for not buying it is that we'll tour their winery at a future date and buy it then. Plus d has seen their wines in local stores. As I live in VA, I have not. Well, that and I haven't looked at the wine in any stores here.

Without a doubt (in my opinion), the best wines were from Penn Oaks Winery. They have this Fantastic white table wine, Liebfraumilch and a white dessert wine called Noble Rot. I almost didn't try the dessert wine because of the name. Who wants to drink something called rot?? I'm very glad I got over my snobbishness (helped that d speaks fluent German and said that it actually meant... something not gross, I don't remember what). It's soooo goooood. I bought a bottle of each, as did d. We ended up trying six of their wines and liked them all.

There were also a variety of artisans there. An amazing pearl booth by JRo Pearls was a highlight. I managed not to buy anything. Tho d bought enough for both of us :)

There were also a couple of photography booths that I enjoyed. Both only displayed photos of nature. I'm not a fan of photos with people in them. I don't want strangers hanging on my walls. I have to deal with strangers whenever I go out, I don't want to deal with them when I'm at home. Only photos with people in them at my place, are people I know and love. I'm squirrelly like that. Give me a good nature scene, abstract painting, cute critter, or deep space photography any day!

By far a better festival than the one I went to a few weeks back. Nobody wearing wings or horns or antenna. Although I did see a guy in a kilt and several females in skimpy attire. I even saw one lady wearing a rennaissance style gown. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

JoinRed, Cut The Bait and Poor Sharks

Firstly, two new links (and their backup links) for yall to check out.

The JoinRed Blog is up and running. The Red campaign is a multi-national, multi-corporation initiative to support The Global Fund (Fightings AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria). Currently there are several members of the RED team in Africa. The blogs will cover what they've seen, what they're doing, what they wish they can be doing etc. and will be updated when possible, depending on internet availability.

Then there's Cut The Bait from Oceana. They're an organization fighting to save the world's oceans. I saw an ad for Cut The Bait on the metro this morning. It's amazing the things that are advertised on there.

And secondly, very sadly, the Oilers beat the Sharks last night in Game 6. I'm so sorry Maddie! I did my best and (mostly) watched Alias instead of the hockey game (in case I was jinxing them). However, I saw that the refs had a had in it. There should've been a penalty and that first goal would never have counted! Who knows what would've happened in the game after that. On the bright side (for me, anyway) I won't have any conflicting emotions cheering on the Canes all the way. I don't like the Ducks and not a fan of the Oilers (now) either. GO CANES!! :)

It's All About the Vision

The Edge 'It's all about the vision'

From The Independent, May 15, 2006

by Andy Gill

It has often been noted that America has scant regard for its cultural heritage, particularly when that is African-American in origin. Black jazz musicians touring Europe in the Forties and Fifties were so shocked at the respectful welcome they received -- "They called me sir!" -- that several opted to spend long periods of their lives here.

Many were the ageing black bluesmen rescued from obscurity in the Sixties by the attentions of white British kids such as the Stones. The great Son House no longer owned a guitar when he was plucked from ignominy to reestablish his profile late in that decade. If it had been left up to America, he would have remained a figure of myth, like Robert Johnson.

The latest example of that country's cavalier attitude towards its black artists has been the disregard with which its establishment agencies have treated New Orleans, arguably the most significant musical city on the continent, the American Vienna. "For me, in DNA terms, it's like the original of the rock 'n' roll species," says U2 guitarist, the Edge. "That area is where that particular combination of influences created the musical environment that spawned jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll. It's that obvious African influence, mingled with other European musics -- the Scots and Irish influence, the French influence -- that's where it just seemed to go off."

The results have been powerfully influential: the jazz of King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, the piano flavours of Jelly Roll Morton, Professor Longhair and Dr John, the seminal rock 'n' roll of Little Richard and Fats Domino, and the spicy R&B of the Meters, Allen Toussaint and Lee Dorsey.

"The piano and brass were more the New Orleans thing," reckons the Edge. "That early rock 'n' roll stuff was all piano, which got crossed with other instruments when people like Chuck Berry took piano riffs and put them on guitar. I don't think rock 'n' roll would have existed without New Orleans, and there's a huge debt of gratitude owed by anyone out there who earns their living from contemporary rock 'n' roll music, to remember that this place did kick-start the whole thing. There'd be no Beatles, no Rolling Stones, no Elvis."

To many, it appears as if the city's musical heritage has been left to die in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Last November, Edge flew into this cauldron of popular culture, and was struck by the aerial view. "Coming in to land, all you saw was that every second roof had a blue tarpaulin over it, so the entire city was this patchwork of blue tarpaulin," he recalls. "I went there three weeks ago, and in the Lower Ninth Ward, it's exactly the same, almost a year later. They haven't done anything."

The Lower Ninth Ward is the musical heartbeat of the city. Tourists may flock to the jazz bars and hokey Dixieland bands playing in the picturesque French Quarter, but the true source of the music is in the poor black neighbourhood that spawned the city's rich jazz and R&B heritage, home to Fats Domino, the Neville Brothers and countless other giants of rock 'n' roll. Today, the best part of a year after the disaster, it remains in ruins.

"While certain other districts were getting their utilities turned back on, there were still National Guard or police stopping people going into the Ninth Ward to even view their homes: they just did not want people to go back there," says the Edge.

It is mind-boggling how wrong-headed the official response has been to the disaster. It's apparently possible to get a grant to knock down your old house, but you have to apply online. Presumably with your waterlogged computer. And according to a CNN reporter the Edge spoke to, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's initial action was to spend $180m (£95m) building a huge, hi-tech morgue a few miles outside the city, with accommodation and living facilities for hundreds of staff. In the event, a mere 60 autopsies were carried out there, after which it was quietly mothballed and placed under security guard, like the Millennium Dome. You couldn't make it up.

There was a longer-term danger of New Orleans' creative spirit being allowed to wither through inaction, as the musicians who provide the core industry of America's favourite party town have been flung far and wide.

"Other parts of America have music scenes, but it really is a completely self-sufficient music culture in New Orleans," explains the Edge. "It's like the city is one giant music academy: everyone is into music, everyone's learning how to play from other musicians. And with Katrina, that whole system has been completely shattered."

Faced with the incompetence of the federal agencies, it has been left up to musicians, and the music industry, to try to restore the city's musical foundations. With the Edge and producer Bob Ezrin at its head, an alliance of promoters and manufacturers, notably Gibson Guitars, last year started Music Rising, a charity that aimed to put instruments back in the hands of professional musicians whose axes had been destroyed in the flood.

Grants of $1,000 are being disbursed to the needy, who were given the chance to buy replacement gear at cost price. So far, the charity has helped out some 1,500 musicians, including the blues guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington, saxophonist Brian "Breeze" Cayolle, and Deacon John Moore, who played the nimble guitar licks on Robert Parker's classic "Barefootin'." The great Fats Domino was provided with a new Baldwin piano by Gibson.

The company also replaced the equipment of the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band. In town for the recent annual Jazz and Heritage Festival, where he guested with the Dave Matthews Band and sang "Stand By Me" with the New Birth Brass Band, the Edge also sat in with the Preservation Hall band, most of whom are in their sixties and seventies. "They ended up learning a kind of Dixieland version of 'Vertigo,' which was so brilliant!" he chuckles.

Musicians have rallied around the city, with charity events such as the New York MTV/MusiCares concert featuring Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint, Dr John and a host of other notables. Quint Davis, organiser of the annual New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival, was elated that the likes of Costello, Springsteen and Bob Dylan all agreed to play this year, ensuring a sizeable audience. Other initiatives included a ticket auction which raised more than $100,000, and Gibson's Music Rising guitar, a limited-edition Les Paul made from wood sourced from the devastated area, which quickly sold out.

Gibson is now planning a more affordable, larger edition of a Music Rising Epiphone Casino, the guitar used by John and George in the Beatles' early years, and subsequently by such as Noel Gallagher and, indeed, the Edge. "What we're trying to do now with Music Rising is broaden things a little," he says. "We haven't done any press in Europe, primarily because it's an American initiative, but the Epiphone Music Rising guitar should have more relevance to Europe; and we'll be using a design that will also be available as a T-shirt. We're just trying to come up with ideas to raise cash.

The charity's next priority is to assist in the rebuilding of churches. "We rely on politicians too much," the Edge concludes. "They don't necessarily have the skills to deal with a situation like this, or the vision. So it's down to the artists and the musicians who understand what's at stake. While I was walking around at the jazz festival, four or five musicians came up to me and said, 'Thanks for the new amp, man, it's got me back on the road,' or 'Thanks for the guitar.' It was really inspiring, an amazing feeling, and it showed that this really is making a difference."

Visit Music Rising for more information, to buy T-shirts and make donations.

Mmmm Wet Dog Hair

So I've sung the praises of the Bertoli Three Cheese Tortelini in the blue bag on the dry pasta aisle many times. The first oh ten times or so it was melt in your mouth scrumptious! However, the last two bags have had a rather displeasing aroma. They taste okay, not scrumptious but okay. It's just hard to devour the pasta with as much enthusiasm as I used to when it smells like wet dog hair.

Not that there's anything wrong with the smell of wet dog hair. I love dogs. And their being wet usually means they were out frolicking in the rain. Fun! I love playing in the rain. I just don't want my food to smell like dogs. Wet or otherwise. I'm squirrelly like that.

WooooooHooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carolina Hurricanes win the series against the new jersey devils 4-1 by winning tonight's game 4-1. To top it all off Cam Ward (goalie) was interviewed after the game - he's a cutie! AND they played Beautiful Day by U2. I love the Canes! Great hockey night!! I'm so excited! So happy! In case yall couldn't tell :)

Yeah Canes!!! Way to play!!! Finally got rid of those devils!!! Eastern conference finals against the Sabres now. Game on! And no. It won't be hard to pick a team to cheer for. It's Canes all the way!!

Sooooo glad there is hockey!! Cory Stillman I hope your leg is okay!! And Erik Cole, I hope the xrays show good things!

And, for Maddie, Go Sharks!!! *fingers crossed* Please don't let me jinx them!

A Rope, A Tree, Hang the Referee!

Yes that swearing and shouting of disbelief yall heard yesterday afternoon was yours truly. I'm vocal when it comes to watching hockey. And yesterday's game seriously ticked me off! Sure the Canes weren't in top form and the devils were playing better but that does NOT excuse the referees! Or the crappy announcers on NBC!!

I had the game on mute from the end of the first period on. I just couldn't take the obvious cheering for the devils from the announcers! What the heck?? I thought announcers were supposed to be neutral! Just report the game! Not call every little move by the devils as genius and brilliant. And then cover the Canes as "oh yeah, Ward blocked a shot." Gah! The public channels hardly cover hockey and when they finally do, they do it horribly. I'd rather they not show it at all than to cover it like they did yesterday. You hear that NBC??!! Don't show hockey if you can't have your announcers be neutral! Keep it on OLN! Next season I may cave and get Center Ice.

And the refs! Obviously they were paid by the devils to make calls for them. Or maybe they just want more games? Do refs get paid by the game?? Cause that would make sense for the calls they made and, more importantly, the ones they DIDN'T make! Janssen needs to be pistol whipped for that hit on Adams that should've been called as interference at the very least! Apparently the devils were so desperate Not to be shut out that they had to play dirty. I guess if that's the only way they can win... but can they really look themselves in the eyes the next day? Pathetic.

Game 1 stats
Game 2 stats
Game 3 stats
Game 4 stats

Game 5 is tonight on OLN. 7 pm Eastern time. Yall know where I'll be.

Coffee! in Cubeville Take 2

I had this lovely entry all written up. I was just previewing it, checking for spelling mistakes when this wretched horrid web browser decides to make it go poof. I despise Internet Explorer. I want Mozilla!!!! But since I can't install ANYTHING on my computer here, I'm stuck with this POS browser. Grrrrrrrrr

Anywho, there's a convenience store attached to my new work building. We just have to walk through a breezeway on the fourth floor and we're there. This week the owner has been giving us free coffee. Next week it'll go away and a small (8 oz) will be $1.00, medium a $1.10 and large (20 oz) a $1.20. Anyone else see something squirrelly about these prices?

Also the owner of the store is blind. You have to tell him what you're getting and the denomination of the bills you hand him. That requires more trust of strangers than I have. Especially of the people here. There's been so much bitching going on by the Fed. employees regarding the contractors (which I am) it's pitiful. And makes for a crappy work environment. I don't know. Maybe they're just pissy because they went from offices to cubes and are taking it out on us. Doesn't make us like them any better. I lock up my pens, pencils, post its, etc every night. I don't trust people to not take my supplies. People are already stealing chairs. Whatever.

Okay enough bitching from me. I don't want people to think that I'm one of these fed. employees! I'll try to post more often next week. And be more upbeat and squirrelly with my posts as well :)

Happy Friday! and Go Canes!!!! The Avs are out (*cry* they're my second fave team) and the Sabres (my third fave) lead their series 3-1. HOCKEY!!! :)

Grr Argh Infinity!

I'm not sure where to start. Most importantly is my belated shout out to a friend.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMY!!!! I was very bad and didn't get her called on Saturday and the e-card I sent came back because I typed the email address wrong. I'm a loser. Sorry Amy! Hope it was everything good you wanted it to be and none of the bad!

I recently moved buildings at work. That is, the company I'm contracted to moved buildings, so we had to move too. It's been a mess. Yet we get this chirpy email saying that the move has gone soooo wweellll. Whatever! you idiots. Providing a free shuttle to the new building from the old one and giving the drivers a different schedule than your employees does not indicate a smooth move to me. Nor does having everyone sign up for times to get their computers set up (passwords, etc) two days before the move only to "throw out the times" the day everyone returns because you failed to train people on how to set up the computers. People are still locked out of their computers. I'd hate to think what a bad move would entail.

Sunday I went to a Fairy Festival in Pennsylvania with a friend and her son. It was ..different. It was like a Ren Faire (Renniassnce Festival) in that more people were dressed up than not. At least, I hope they don't wear those outfits on a daily basis. Fairy wings, horns, masks, furry tails, filmy floaty dresses, barely there (see through) dresses, skin tight dresses, kilts, flourescent rainbow wigs, antenna. Just about anything you could possibly envision a fairy wearing was present. There was this one girl walking around in a pink prom dress (glittery bodice, with wide, poofy skirts), with a Miss America smile constantly on her face, carrying an orange A-Team lunchbox. I guess I missed the news blurb where it said that Mr. T. is a proud supporter of fairies.

I have glitter all over my backseat from my friend's fairy wings. This was her third year going. This was my first (and most likely last) time going. Although she did say that this year was very different from previous years. Different (ruder) people, fewer vendors, less music, etc. I dunno. Maybe in a year I'll be ready for another dose of random fairy people encounters.

And I saved the best for last... GO CANES!!!!!!! They lead the series against the New Jersey Devils 2-0. Last night's game was Awesome!!! Devils led 1-0 for most of the game, then the Canes tied it up. THEN with only about 25 seconds left in the third period, the Devils score giving them the lead 2-1. Agony! Laviolette (Canes' coach) pulls Cam (goalie) and puts in a sixth forward for the face off at center ice. Canes lose the face off but the Devils put the puck way back in their territory. Much skating and shouting ensue (okay shouting from myself and the other fans) and Canes score! There's only 3.7 seconds left in the regular game and we tie it up again!! Forcing it into overtime! Lots more cheering (I'm sure my neighbors hate me and hockey now). In sudden death overtime Canes score just over 3 minutes into it. We win! Oh man!! GREAT Game!!! Granted the first game in the series (best of seven) was fantastic too! We won that one 6-0 :)

Go Hurricanes!! Win the Stanley Cup!! Yall can do it!!!!!!

Something Fishie Went On Here....

Hmmm I see while I was off touring the eastern seaboard with Sir Alfred Gluttony (my male betta), he was busy sneaking around at odd hours posting on my blog. He's a squirrelly little fishie. I'm sure he's quite happy to be back in his two gallon tank with castle and fake plants.

Anyway, I'm back in VA. Last Friday I drove to Ohio and spent the weekend at my brother & sister-in-law's house. As Glutt posted earlier, we (brother, father & I) laid some Pergo floors in the kitchen, dining room & front entry (sis-in-law, nephew & mother were touring Longaberger baskets and the town of Dresden, Ohio on Saturday).

Monday morning I drove to North Carolina (and nearly danced for joy when I found gas for $2.72 a gallon in Wytheville, VA). I crashed with Elims "somewhere" in Johnston county until Wednesday afternoon. Weds I drove to Raleigh and stayed with some other friends. W went out to dinner and then hung out on their very groovy patio chatting. Thursday morning I drove back to VA. I got home around 1.30 in the afternoon. Traffic was incredibly light! Mind boggling light!

Today I've been loafing. I went shopping and got maybe 75% of the stuff I was looking for. I had no idea it'd be soooo hard to find a stupid thermos! And a cup with a filter on it! Oy! May hit some more home goods type stores tomorrow. I'm all shopped out for the day. Not sure I can handle anymore people. Besides, I need to do laundry.

More Furry Encounters

I couldn't risk getting to the computer on Wednesday. Little black princess was restless and moving around most of the night. I did my best to taunt her though, as payback for preventing me from surfing and writing.

Last night Herself and I went back on the road but it wasn't for too long this time. Which is good because I had just eaten and was feeling queasy. It's not true that fish don't get seasick! We're not used to traveling in cars in a itty bit of water! There's more sloshing around and changes in pressure than I ever get in my tank. Thankfully I'm sturdier than most and handle it like a grouper (the fish not the soldier).

The new place has two humans I met briefly back in December and two more little furry critters. One is all long haired and acts like he's royalty. I've heard the humans say he's a Himalayan so I guess he needs all that fur to survive in the mountains but it makes me wonder why he's living here. It gets so hot. The other one is all grey and very nosy and hyperactive. He went running around the place with a crazed look in his eye last night. Not long thereafter I noticed this horrible smell. I heard Herself laughing like a loon. Humans. They have the oddest sense of humor.

Well I hear the humans moving around, I better sneak back to my cup. No easy feat with hyperactive and furball on the prowl. But I persevere. I'm a slave to my art, what can I say?

Close Encounters of the Furry Kind

We were in the car for hours. It's a good thing I have a sturdy stomach since we went through the mountains. Lots of ups and downs and twists and turns. My 'tank' was sloshing all over the place. Not as bad as last Friday though when she was taking me to the car and sloshed part of my home onto the sidewalk.

Then we get to our destination and what do I see??? Furry things!! Four of them! How am I supposed to roam around when there are four legged furry critters with big teeth between me and the computer?? I think they're called dogs and cats. It's my first encounter with real ones. They seem awfully noisy and needy, the big ones anyway. The little black one thinks she's all that and a tub of brine shrimp.

Thankfully the three big ones were in crates for most of the night so I only had to worry about the little black princess. Although the furriest of the big ones was in a crate in front of my tank! I had to be careful not to disturb him, lest he wake up my human. Thankfully the red & brown furry one snores in his sleep and blocked any sounds I might have made. The little black one was nowhere to be seen for most of the night. She blends in too easily to the shadows. I think she may be my biggest threat. I'll keep an eye out for her the most tonight.
